Your Bio

I am Harold Buzzell, City of Portsmouth, NH fire photographer. I am a member of Greenland, NH Fire Department and Colleton County SC Fire Rescue. I also take pictures for Exeter FD, Hampton FD, North Hampton FD and Rye FD, here in the seacoast of New Hampshire.

I have met so many great men and woman of the fire service. Some call me "Harold" and some call me "Buzz" but most all of them call me "Friend".

I would like to thank all the officers, firefighters and other EMS personnel that enable me to take these photos. My promise to you is to always show you in a positive light and honor what a wonderful job you do.

I have always had an interest in the fire service as my father was a long time Volunteer firefighter in Southboro, Mass. My older brother and I joined the department as Civil Defence Auxiliary Firefighters. He was 17 and I was 16. (Yes, that was back when big hose was 2 1/2 inch and SCBA used a cartridge that got hot and you dropped into a bucket of water). I served as a volunteer there until I entered the USAF in 1964. I served 20 years in the US Air Force and am very proud of my service. In 1990 I joined North Hampton, NH fire department and completed Firefighter 1 training (back when SCBA tanks were steel). In 1996 I resigned due to a medical issue and Lt. Peter Francis suggested I take photos to remain engaged with the fire service. I took his advice and became the official photographer for the department. I am now the photographer for many of the fire departments in the Seacoast of New Hampshire. I try to document the scene in photos as well as showing the more human side of my brothers and sisters. I have made many wonderful friends and enjoy spending our summers with this family.

As many of you know I lost my wife Nancy July 19, 2013. She was my constant companion and best friend. I am sure many of you saw her taking pictures from the car while I did my thing at the scene. My heart is heavy but filled with her love. I miss you and will always LOVE you Nancy, it was a great 47 years.

I will most likely continue to live in Walterboro, SC in the winter with my daughter Carolyn and her family. I volunteer there with the Colleton County Fire Rescue as a firefighter/ photographer. The department has made me feel like family and I enjoy the winters with that family.

I will come north when the spirit moves me and live in North Hampton, NH during the summer with my daughter Heidi and her family.

I am starting this web page as a response to many request for my photos. I have arranged the photos by year, community, and date of event. You will notice that there is an option to purchase copies at very reasonable prices. Any profits will be used to off-set the cost of operating website. I hope you will enjoy my photos.

If you see me at a scene, come say hi. Let me know how you like this site. If you would like a "buddy shot" please ask.
